About the HomeSafe Communities

The HomeSafe Collaborative researched and developed a model for providing battered women and their children with comprehensive services in a transitional living setting. The shared housing approach emerged as the best way to help transition those clients exiting emergency shelters and in need of affordable housing. Shared housing has been used successfully with other low-income groups, but HomeSafe's project will be the first to use shared housing specifically for battered women and will introduce new features customized to meet the needs of this unique family group.

"For thirty years, our area has provided domestic violence victims primarily with short-term, emergency housing. Long-term housing, such as HomeSafe, changes that. Victims will no longer be forced to return to batterers."

As in all the HomeSafe sites, families have a private living space while sharing kitchen and other public areas. The community building houses case management, counseling and other support services.

The total cost of the four HomeSafe facilities together is $33.5MM. Groundbreaking does not begin on a HomeSafe site until the capital funds for construction are secured. Operating expenses for each community are secured through annual campaigns and offset by residential rental fees.

Each site has a lead agency that will oversee staffing, and programs.

Funding
A total of $5.7MM was raised for the Phase I, HomeSafe Santa Clara. The capital campaign for Phase II, HomeSafe San Jose began during the summer of 2001, yielding more than half of the $7.9MM needed to build this site.
